Fairtrade Schools Award

The Fairtrade Foundation administers a scheme whereby a school can become a Fairtrade School.

To become a Fairtrade School you need to meet 5 goals:-

  • Set up a Fairtrade School Steering Group of pupils and adults (e.g. teacher, governor, catering staff, parent) with at least half pupils, which meets at least once a term to promote Fairtrade and monitor its use.
  • Write and adopt a Fairtrade Policy which has the support of the board of Governors and is signed by the Head teacher. *
  • Use and sell Fairtrade products as much as possible.
  • Learn about Fairtrade in at least three subjects in two year groups.
  • Take action for Fairtrade at least once a term in the school and once a year in the community.

*This could include commitments to - Use only Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar at school functions; Encourage the use of Fairtrade products in the Staff Room; Have Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar (and biscuits) available for visitors; Hold occasional Fairtrade stalls either in school or at social functions e.g. Summer or Christmas Fair; Aim to introduce Fairtrade products in the school catering service or vending machines; Encourage the use of Fairtrade products as cookery ingredients.
